Estonia coach rewarded for qualifying success

Estonia have extended the contract of current coach Tarmo Ruutli after leading the nation through the Euro 2012 qualifying group stages.

The newly signed agreement will keep the 57-year-old in charge until the end of 2013, which will include play-offs against the Republic of Ireland for Euro 2012 qualification as well as the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Ruutli has already led the national team through their most successful qualifying campaign, which has now resulted in Estonia taking part in their first ever play-off for a major international tournament.

Having finished above the likes of Serbia, Slovenia and Northern Ireland in the group stages of Euro 2012 qualification, Estonia finished second behind former World Cup champions Italy in Group C.

I want to thank all the players, the federation, our fans and everybody who supports the team, Ruutli told UEFA.com.

I am happy to continue my work for the national side.

Estonia Football Association president Aiver Pohlak said Ruutli s impact on the national side was clear to see.

It is very important that we have reached a new level under this coach, Pohlak said.

I would also underline that we are going to enter a third consecutive campaign under the same coach. You can feel Ruutli s influence on our play.

Ruutli, who also coached the national team for a brief time from 1999 until 2000, has been in charge of the current Estonia squad since January 2008.
