AFC Champions League wrap: Adelaide, Bunyodkor through in style

Adelaide United topped Group E of the AFC Champions League with a 2-0 defeat of Japanese outfit Gamba Osaka on Wednesday.

In a rematch of the 2008 ACL final, Adelaide took the lead in the 65th minute when substitute Sergio van Dijk flicked Daniel Mullen s low right-wing cross into the roof of the net.

Van Dijk had a big chance to score a second goal not long after with a strong header that was parried away by Gamba goalkeeper Yosuke Fujigaya, before Adelaide made it 2-0 with an 87th-minute own goal from the home side s Akihiro Sato.

Bunyodkor made sure of second place in the group after eliminating 2009 champions Pohang Steelers 1-0.

Pohang became the second South Korean side to crash out of this season s tournament at the group stage as Anvar Gafurov s 48th-minute strike proved enough for Bunyodkor to move ahead of the Steelers and advance to the Round of 16.

After an uninspiring opening half, Gafurov scored the winner three minutes after the break to send the Uzbek club to the knockout stages of the ACL for the fifth consecutive season.

Ricardo Oliveira scored all four goals in Al Jazira s 4-3 win away to Al Rayyan in Group A.

The Brazilian striker had wrapped up his hat-trick by the 66th minute before Al Rayyan got back to 3-2.

Another goal to Oliveira in the 88th minute sealed Al Jazira s victory, although a 90th-minute strike from Ahmed Alaadin made for a tense finish.

Al Jazira topped their group ahead of Esteghal, who defeated Nasaf 2-0.

Ulsan topped Group F after a 1-0 win over Tokyo, who also went through to the Round of 16.

After Tokyo hit the post early in the first half, Ulsan scored the only goal of the game in the 37th minute when Min-Soo Kang thumped home a rebound after the ball bounced off the crossbar.

The visitors from Tokyo again hit the post after half-time but Ulsan held on.

In the other Group F clash, Brisbane Roar drew 1-1 with Beijing Guoan.

In Group B, Bani Yas won 2-0 over Pakhtakor to book their place in the Round of 16, while group-winners Al Ittihad ensured Al Arabi exited the tournament winless with a 3-2 win in Jeddah.
